External Apps (LTI Integrations)
What are LTI apps?
LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability and is an integration standard for third party tools. Canvas supports LTI which allows third party tools to be easily integrated and used within Canvas.
What concerns are there for LTI apps?
- FERPA/Privacy Links to an external site.
- Security Links to an external site.
- Universal Design for Learning/Accessibility Links to an external site.
- Cost
- Level of installation (some tools can only be installed system wide while others can be installed at the school or course level)
- Copyright/ownership of content and how content may be used by the vendor
- Terms of Service/Licence Agreements (which may be between an institution and the vendor or between individual users and the vendor)
How are these concerns addressed?
UK Online and the LMS Committee work with the vendor to make sure these concerns are addressed. Security, Legal, and Purchasing offices are also consulted as needed.
How do I request a new LTI app be added to Canvas?
Contact the Learning Management team and Complete the LTI Request Form Links to an external site..
Please note that installation of new tools will happen prior to the start of terms (unless there is an urgent need) to minimize disruption to users.
What LTI apps are available in Canvas?
The following tools are installed and available for all courses in UK's Canvas:
- Ally (by Anthology)
- DesignPLUS (by CIDILabs)
- Echo360 ALP Links to an external site.

- ProctorU (Online Proctoring)
- Purchase Course Materials (by B&N College)
- Research & Adopt Course Materials (by B&N College)
- Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor Links to an external site.
- Teacher Course Evaluation (by eXplorance Blue)
- Turnitin
- UDOIT
- YuJa Media
- Zoom
Note that several tools are currently in pilot and available for use. In addition, some colleges or departments have specific tools available for their faculty to use.
How do I enable these tools in my course?
It depends on the tool. LTI tools that allow assignment submissions, such as Turnitin are enabled in the assignment settings. Tools that add a button to the content editor are enabled by default. Plugins on the far right side of the content editor toolbar. If you are on a smaller screen, you may need to press the more icon to see additional buttons. LTI Tools that add a course navigation menu item are disabled by default. You can find your course navigation options in settings on the menu. Please see theWho should I contact with questions?
