Week Two: The Atom and its Electronic Structure, pt. 2

 Module Overview

Within this module, we will learn about the components inside the atom and look especially at the electrons. The electron structure determines the properties of the elements. So, by the end of this series of lessons, you will know for each elements where the electrons are located in the atom.

 Learning Objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  1. Recognize the connections between the various quantum numbers and explain how to assign correct quantum numbers to an electron in an atom.
  2. Identify the connections between the wavelength of light emitted by an atom and the energy change of the electron as it undergoes the transition.
  3. Identify the shapes and energies of the various atomic orbitals and list the orbitals from lowest to highest energy in a multi-electron system.
  4. Arrange electrons in a ground state atom to the correct shells, sub shells and orbitals.
  5. Determine the electron configuration for any element.
