Week Four: Compounds

 Module Overview

Now that we know the structure of an atom, we can explore how atoms combine to form either molecular or ionic compounds. Then we will learn the rules of nomenclature that ensure that a compound is named according to IUPAC rules. We will end this unit by looking at quantitative relationships for compounds including the molar mass of and mass percent of an element in a compound.

 Learning Objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify substances as elements or compounds.
  2. Identify the types of bond(s) present in different substances.
  3. Write empirical and molecular formulas and draw structural formulas, ball-and-stick models, and space-filling model.
  4. Determine the formula of ionic compounds.
  5. Name ionic compounds according to IUPAC rules.
  6. Name molecular compounds according to IUPAC rules.
  7. Name oxyacids and binary acids according to IUPAC rules.
  8. Calculate the molar mass of compounds.
  9. Calculate the percent by mass of each element in a compounds.
  10. Explain the relationships determined by the subscripts in a chemical formula.
  11. Determine the chemical formula of a compound based on experimental data.
