Dr. Kathi Kern, an Associate Professor from the Department of History, is an innovator in her own classrooms and brings energy and enthusiasm to the teaching enterprise at UK. She has won UK's Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teaching (1995), the Alumni Great Teacher Award (2003) and the College of Education's "Teachers Who Make a Difference" Award (2001, 2004). She has authored several successful grants funded through the Teaching American History Grant program of the US Department of Education with awards totaling nearly four million dollars. Professor Kern served as the Stanley Kelley Jr., Visiting Associate Professor for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton University in the 2009-2010 academic year.

Bill has been at the University of Kentucky since 1995 working in the field of educational development. He is also adjunct faculty in the Biology Department where he teaches large enrollment UK Core courses. Bill came to UK from the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he worked for 23 years teaching biology and directing faculty development programs. He was awarded the University of Hawaii President's Award for Outstanding Teaching. Bill's primary focus is working with new faculty by overseeing the New Faculty Teaching Academy and mid-semester course feedback service and assisting with assembling teaching portfolios to document instructional activities.

Dr. Deb Castiglione earned her doctorate in distance learning from the University of Kentucky. She brings skills, knowledge, and experience in instructional design and development, universal design, accessibility, and assistive technology. Deb is a RESNA certified assistive technology professional (ATP) and has worked with children and adults with disabilities. She has developed and taught courses in instructional design, assistive technology, and universal design for Gateway Community & Technical College, the University of Cincinnati, and Northern Kentucky University. Her passions include incorporating accessibility and universal design into learning for everyone.

 

Cara Worick

Cara Worick collaborates with new and expert instructors as they create meaningful learning experiences for their students. She is committed to enhancing student success and psychological well-being in educational contexts through evidence-based and innovative pedagogies. Working with faculty and academic departments on initiatives involving teaching first-year students, developing self-regulated learning skills in students, designing hybrid/online/flipped classroom models, and designing engaged service learning experiences remain a central focus of her work. Cara joined CELT in 2011and holds a M.S. in Instructional Design from Western Kentucky University and a B.A. in Communications from the University of Kentucky.

Ashley Sorrell

Dr. Ashley Sorrell offers support for faculty who are interested in implementing innovative active-learning teaching strategies in the classroom. She also works with the Graduate School at UK to provide workshops and professional development opportunities for graduate teaching assistants. Before joining CELT, Ashley was a teaching assistant for UK’s Department of History, where she earned her Ph.D in 2016. In 2014, she was awarded the UK Provost Outstanding Teaching Award in the TA category for her success in enhancing student learning through innovative teaching.

Dr. Nicole Martin completed her doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin in performance studies with an emphasis in critical race theory and black feminism. Her work at CELT focuses on weaving critical performative pedagogy into faculty development. Nicole also leads workshops and consultations around creating inclusive classroom spaces and facilitating dialogue across cultural and racial difference.

Trey holds an MA in poetry and creative writing from the University of Nebraska and is completing a PhD in English from The Ohio State University, where he has studied British Romanticism, digital humanities, rhetoric, and writing. Among other positions, Trey has served as the Associate Director of the Digital Media and Composition (DMAC) Institute at Ohio State. At CELT, Trey has supported a wide range of faculty initiatives across the colleges. He especially is interested in the application of humanities methodologies and pedagogies as well as the meaningful use and critique of digital media and technologies in the curriculum. Off campus, Trey is a regular practitioner of hot yoga and completed a 200-hour teacher training in 2016. [View Trey's CV] Links to an external site.

Sarah makes sure that CELT has the resources, organization, and communication to accomplish its goals and increase its presence. She holds a Bachelor's degree in business management from Asbury University and plans to complete a project management certification in the spring.

Kate Collins

Student Assistant

Kate Collins is a student in the Department of Physics at the University of Kentucky. Her eight years of experience in early childhood education has made her very passionate about education. She is excited to be at the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching where she supports workshops and does research.
