Outreach Programming
University of Kentucky Counseling Center: Consultation and Psychological Services (UKCC) at UK is active in creating a healthy campus climate where students can grow and learn. Outreach is something that we feel is key to our mission, which is largely geared toward the academic, social, and personal success of students. Along with the work that we do with students in a one-on-one setting, our staff of psychologists and counselors provide informative and interactive workshops that are preventative in nature and target groups of individuals. We are involved with the training of resident hall assistants and with the UK101 classes. We also regularly speak in other classes and to various student and staff groups. Specific student groups, such as Greek organizations and athletes, often utilize us for information and workshops. On occasion, we engage in programming for the general public and/or in the community. Topics presented cover a wide range. Some of the commonly presented topics are listed below.
- Stress management
- Reducing test anxiety
- Career exploration and choice of major
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Eating and body concerns
- Healthy relationships
- Relaxation
- Diversity issues
- Perspectives on the world events/tragedies
- Developing your identity
- Effective communication
- Team building and cohesion
- Conflict resolution
- Binge drinking and drug problems
- Gender issues
- Assertiveness
- Understanding your personality as it relates to various settings (e.g., different work environments)
- And the list goes on...
Interview Requests
- The Counseling Center is happy to participate in interviews for media outlets and class assignments. However, due to the nature of the services we provide and because we represent the University of Kentucky, there is a process that must be completed before we can participate. Please note that this process may take several business days, so we suggest you submit requests with as much lead time as possible.
- Complete the UKCC outreach request form Links to an external site. or e-mail our Outreach Coordinator, Dr. Megan Marks (megan.marks@uky.edu) to request an interview. Please include the nature of your request (class, television, radio, newspaper, etc.), as well as the topic and questions you plan to ask, so that we may be prepared.
- You must also contact UK Public Relations (UKPR) to have your questions approved. UKPR may follow up with you before granting permission. Once approval is granted, forward the e-mail approval to Dr. Tyler, and she will coordinate scheduling available staff to participate in the interview as soon as possible.
UKCC Outreach Policy
- Outreach requests should be sent to the outreach coordinator, Dr. Megan Marks (megan.marks@uky.edu). In your request, please include the topic, location, date/time, and number of attendees expected. You can access our request form here Links to an external site.. If you are unsure about the program you would like, we are happy to consult with you and create a presentation to fit your needs. In some cases, another UK department may be better equipped to serve you, e.g., the Career Center, UHS, etc., and we will refer you to the appropriate department.
- We recommend that you make requests for outreach presentations as far in advance as possible. We are able to take requests for Fall Semester beginning in July. We cannot guarantee that requests made with little advance notice will be filled. We will make every effort to fill your request and will contact you as soon as we have coverage for your event so that you can plan accordingly.
- There may be limits on the number of presentations we can give to any one department per semester, so that we may reach as many people as possible throughout the campus and community. We are generally able to provide each presentation one time per department per semester, with the exception of UK 101, 110, 201, RA trainings, and orientations.
- In the event of a cancellation due to staff illness, we will work with you to reschedule your program at a time that is convenient for you.
- If you would like a program on Test Anxiety Links to an external site. or Major/Career Decision-Making Links to an external site., we ask that you first consult our workshop schedule Links to an external site.(http://www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/Counseling/group.html Links to an external site.) as these topics are offered throughout the semester on a drop-in basis (no appointment needed). Workshops are typically held at UKCC. If these dates/times do not fit with your schedule, we can schedule a workshop specifically for your students.
