Program Description

This program is designed for incoming students at the University of Kentucky to improve and prepare them for their first semester and year at this university. This program will focus on math, general scholastic skills, and life skills; these are frequently students stumbling blocks. At the beginning of the 6-week program, there will be assessments that the students will complete for the staff to determine how best we can help the students transition into the university.  The program is organized based on the assessment scores that will then enable the program instructors to help the student hopefully eliminate the need for additional applications. Additionally, there will be conferences or online-based lectures that deal with aspects of college life, such as study skills, campus resources, as well as, campus events.  All to give the experience of what you are about to embark upon in just a few short weeks as a UK Wildcat College Student!

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate an increase in comprehension of math skills.
  2. Students will demonstrate an increase in comprehension of study skills.
  3. Students will identify and understand how to apply their learning styles.
  4. Students will understand how to execute adult living strategies.
  5. Students will learn how to adjust to college life.

There will be a drawing weekly throughout the program for various prizes as a reward for participating and completing program activities.  Prizes will be announced on every other Friday, although drawings will be weekly. Prizes may include items such as a backpack, school supplies, gift cards, movie tickets, a sweatshirt, etc.  Remember, the more you participate, the more chances to win!

Students can be entered into the drawing multiple times. The number of entries is dependent upon the number of events, assignments the students attend and complete.  1 Event =1Entry

Attending Campus Resource"Spotlight"

Participating in Social/Cultural events

Earn a C or higher in their program

Meeting the Math Lab required weekly hours

Receiving extra tutoring

Meeting with your CARES/SSS advisor (optional)

Each completed activity is worth 1 entry.  For example, completion of all study skills topics earns you 7 entries. The more involved you are in this program, the more entries you will earn, and the better your chances are to win in the drawings

Program & Activity Descriptions

Study Skills Topics: The study skills modules may include video, PowerPoint, or other interactive lessons. There will be an assignment within some of the topics for you to complete as part of the module. Activities may be done during the presentation or after, depending on what the presentation is and when you can participate.   Completion of the assignment is required to gain points for completing the study skills topic. If you are unable to attend a study skills conference, you may watch the recording of the conference and complete any accompanying assignments to receive points. If the session does not have an attached assignment, write a short (4-5 sentences) reflection on the conference and submit it to the instructor through Canvas to receive an entry.

 WRD 110 CLASS

This class will have its program and dates and times established in its syllabus, and you can attend professor's office hours, and the completion of the accompanying assignments are required to do well in the class.  If you need writing assistance, tutors will be in the program with you, and you can always ask for writing support.  Remember, both your tutors and staff are here to help you adjust and do well.  Call on them for assistance.  Your tutor has taken the class and is in contact with your instructor, so it is a benefit for you to work with the tutors.

ALEKS Learning Lab (non-credit):

**Students will be required to work at least 4 hours in their ALEKS modules each week, two of which are required during a Zoom ALEKS Learning Lab session with the instructor and tutors. All four required ALEKS hours (Monday to Sunday) can be spent during the Zoom ALEKS learning lab, but only two are required. The weekly options for the labs for you to attend are listed in the modules. You can select whichever session(s) work best for you and do not always have to attend the same session times.

REQUIRED SUPPLIES

  • A notebook capable of holding your classwork and any additional paper distributed in class. Spiral-bound notebooks with pockets should contain at least 150 pages
  • Paper and something to write with, preferably a pencil with an eraser
  • Laptop or computer with a web camera

NOTE:  The only permissible calculator is the one provided within ALEKS.  ALL others are prohibited.

LAB GOAL This lab (non-credit) is designed to help students focus on their individualized math content needs within ALEKS PPL modules (e.g., college algebra, pre-calculus, calculus). Students work to meet their math goals through ALEKS learning objectives, engaging in a math growth mindset, creating an ALEKS math notebook, and setting topic goals. Students are assisted by their lab instructor and peer instructors for one on one and small group instruction. The lab will work to prepare students for individual student success on the ALEKS placement test and focus on mathematics growth mindset.

ATTENDANCE:  Attendance will be taken by the instructor and students that do not work at least 2 hours in Zoom during the ALEKS Learning lab will be shared with Wildcat Academy leaders. Tracking of your 4 weekly hours in ALEKS will also be recorded.

TECHNOLOGY iPads and laptops are permitted for use during class for the purposes of note-taking, ALEKS PPL, and other exercises as directed by your instructor. Unfortunately, ProctorU (needed to take the ALEKS proctored placement test) does not support tablets and Google Chromebooks (for a full list of devices that work with ProctorU click here).

ALEKS MATH NOTEBOOK It is strongly recommended that you keep an ALEKS math notebook for scratch work and for copying down ALEKS examples, steps, and answers.

FINAL ALEKS PLACEMENT TEST

Students will retake their ALEKS proctored placement test at the end of the program during the last week of the program.

TIME IN ALEKS It is imperative that students spend a sufficient amount of time each week moving ahead and mastering their topics.  Data suggests a strong relationship between the amount of time spent working in ALEKS and the progress made in ALEKS.  Students are expected to be actively engaged in ALEKS or related activities during class and to continue to work outside of class toward topic completion.  Hence, the goal for the semester is to spend at least four hours per week working in ALEKS (2 hours are required to be spent in the Zoom ALEKS Learning Lab).  To check the time in ALEKS, go to Reports.  Click on the Time and Topic tile.  You will need to change the date range to reflect the current date range (usually Monday through Sunday).

RESOURCE SPOTLIGHT:

The University of Kentucky has numerous resources and many different areas to learn. The “spotlight hours” will provide insight into a few valuable resources that are available to you as you transition to becoming a student at the University of Kentucky. Becoming familiar with these resources: where they are located, what are the hours of operation, and what services they offer, means you will be steps ahead when you need them. Make sure you have your notebook and pen. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to start your college career off a step ahead of your peers. The campus resource “Spotlight Hour” is every Tuesday and Thursday at 2:00 pm -2:30 pm. The dates are in the course modules. The “Spotlight Hours” will cover major life skills, academic skills, and essential information for campus survival. During the “Spotlight Hours,” the guest speaker may have you do an interactive activity. Attendance at the “Spotlight Hours” and completion of the interactive activity, if there is one, is required for one drawing entry. Yes, you will be required to submit the activity if one is assigned to the presenter/instructor.

Social & Cultural Activities: Our cultural activities will be through BBNvolved, which is where you will find most events on campus. BBNvolved is the online hub for campus involvement.  You can search and browse for student organizations to get involved in, connect with student leaders, request an involvement advising appointment, and more!  Students looking to get involved can use the search bar to navigate through keywords, categories, and more to find an organization to join. The following is the link:  https://getinvolved.uky.edu/bbnvolved    Again each event is worth 1 entry, so the more you attend the more chances to win.  You will register for each cultural activity through BBNvolved, we will get the attendance roster.
