Facilitating Group Work with Zoom
Creating breakout rooms allows the instructor to distribute the class into smaller groups for collaboration and group-based learning activities. Breakout rooms will allow students to share video, audio, whiteboards, desktops, and can easily integrate with third-party cloud storage and collaboration services.
Creating Breakout Rooms
First: Enable the Breakout feature
Before you can create breakout rooms in your Zoom meeting, you will need to make sure that the breakout feature is enabled in your account. More information about this can be found within the Zoom Help Article 'Getting Started with Breakout Rooms Links to an external site..'

- Move all participants into breakout rooms automatically (otherwise, students will need to click Join to be added to the breakout room).
- Allow participants to return to the main session at any time (otherwise, they'll need to wait for you to end the breakout rooms).
- Breakout rooms close automatically after X minutes (if you'd like the breakout rooms to automatically end after the configured time).
- Notify me with the time is up (this will let you know when the breakout room time is up).
- Countdown after closing breakout rooms (this will give the students a countdown timer before their breakout room is closed and they are returned to the main room).
- Next, you'll be able to click on the 'Open All Sessions' button.
Breakout Sessions 'In Progress'
Once the breakout rooms have been started, you will be able to
- move from session to session to observe and participate in the breakout groups
- leave a breakout session to return to the main meeting (the Leave option only shows when you're in a breakout room)
- broadcasting a message to all breakout groups to share information with all students.
- select 'Close All Rooms' button to stop all rooms after a 60 second countdown. This will be shown to both you and your students. After the 60 seconds are over, the students will be returned to the main meeting.
Ask For Help
While in breakout rooms, your students can click on the 'Ask for Help' button, which will notify you that they need assistance and ask you to join their meeting room.
