Ensuring Accessibility - Headers

Headers

Headings and subheadings (Links to an external site.) are used in longer documents to help readers develop a mental map and skip to different sections as needed. Headings provide the structure for a logical navigation capability with assistive technology much like a sighted individual will visually scan a page to find a particular section. Users on a screen reader can also make use of headings, but only if they are semantically tagged as headings.

Creating Headers on a Page

Use the text style menu to assign a Header style to any text you have identified as a heading.

Use the Paragraph style to indicate smaller chunks of text.

Use the heading drop down menu within the Rich Content Editor, select the appropriate heading style you want to use in the Canvas page.

This can be easily done in Canvas by using “styles” such as Header 2, Header 3, and so forth.

Do not use styling options (font size, bold, italic, underline) to format text so it visually appears as headings without using header styles. Screen readers do not recognize these as headings.

Creating Headers in a Module

Just headers provide structure to content pages, adding text headers to your module can help highlight key areas, such as "Instructional Content", "Assessments", or "Start Here".

Adding text headers within your course modules can help better organize your module items into clear categories.
