Audio Proximity Test (10 minutes)

You don’t need to buy expensive equipment to record audio. Use the steps below to find the best way to record audio using your computer’s microphone or a set of earbuds.

Set up your computer

  1. Launch your media recording software
    • On a Mac, launch Quicktime Player
    • On a PC, launch Voice Recorder
    • Or use whichever recording software you prefer
  2. Open up a new audio recording file
  3. Change any necessary settings
    • Make sure your microphone settings are appropriately (to your computer’s microphone or earbuds/headset)
    • If available, set quality to “high”

Start recording

  1. Click the red record dot (it will turn into a square stop-record button)
  2. Recite a short sentence
    • If you’re using your computer’s microphone, recite the sentence from a typical distance (1.5 - 2 feet)
    • If you’re using earbuds, recite the sentence while leaving the earbuds in their normal position (somewhere below your chin)
  3. Change the position of your microphone and recite the sentence again
    • If you’re using your computer’s microphone, recite the sentence again while leaning very close to the keyboard
    • If you’re using earbuds, recite the sentence while holding the mic just to the side of your mouth (no more than 1 or 2 inches away)
  4. Stop the recording
  5. Save the file.

Compare the quality

Listen to the recording and note the difference between the two sentences.
