Knowledge check (2 minutes)

Sandra has found 3 journals that she is considering sending her research to. She asks you for advice on picking the most suitable one. What question(s) do you ask her?

  1. Who publishes the journal? Do you recognize any of the names of the editors or authors?
  2. Does the publisher clearly state submission fees and typical response times on their site?
  3. Do this journal’s articles show up in your favorite database or search engine? Where else are this journal’s articles indexed, and who will be able to find them?

Answer: All three of these questions are important to ask Sandra. It is important to find a journal that will make her work accessible, has a strong reputation, and is transparent in their practices.
