Choose a journal in your field (5 minutes)
Identify a journal in your discipline that you would consider submitting to.
Consider a journal that:
- You read often
- Your favorite faculty member or advisor has published in
- Is listed as a "Top Publication" in Google Scholar Metrics Links to an external site. (use the "Categories" drop-down menu to explore by discipline and subdisciplines)

Reflect on your evaluation
Use the questions below to reflect on your evaluation. Share some of your findings with a friend or colleague.
- Does your chosen journal have a good reputation?
- Was the information you sought easy to find?
- Did your perception of the journal match the findings of your evaluation?
- Do any of these criteria introduce bias into your decision-making?
- Was one rating different from others? Why do you think that is?
- Did you adjust the weight of any of the criteria? Why?
- Is there anything else that you think is important for evaluating a journal?
