Cultural Competency Module Introduction
Cultural Competency in Planning
CRPLAN 6191 | Instructor: Kimberly Burton | The Ohio State University, City & Regional Planning
Welcome to this online module! This module was developed with a recently-graduated CRP master's student who wanted to help build more educational opportunities into the curriculum related to cultural competency, inclusivity, and diversity.
This page will introduce the module, provide an overview of the content, and show you how to get started.
In our various stages in life, we will encounter many types of people with different backgrounds, cultures, and identities. So it is important that we become aware of and accepting of these differences. Doing so will help us create an amicable and accepting environment in school, at work, and everywhere else we interact with people. This module will help you explore the issues that arise from implicit bias and how you can understand and address them.
What is learned in this module could be utilized and expanded upon during your entire tenure in the program. It also is important to understand how these issues can impact various environments that we often find ourselves in such as school and the workplace.
For Planners, implicit bias can create many issues in the work we do and it is important to acknowledge and address its presence in our practice. In the workplace, bias can impact our decisions, interactions with coworkers, and communication with the public. In school, bias can perpetuate stereotypes, limit resources and support, and create barriers to attaining higher education degrees.
The key takeaways of this module are:
- Defining implicit bias
- Learning how it can impact school and work
- Developing self-awareness
