An Unabridged lesson from GIS, maps + data @ Harvard Libraries (10 minutes)
Practice navigating through a GIS environment by getting comfortable with census data from nhgis.org.
- Visit nhgis.org Links to an external site.
- Select Get Data
- Use the filters on the left to explore the available datasets:
- Geographic levels
- Years
- Topics
- Datasets
- Pick one statistical table to add to your cart. Choose a topic you’re interested in.
- Pick the correct corresponding GIS file to go along with the dataset you selected
Tip: Not sure what to select? Think about which geographic level you need to download for the GIS file. Not sure what this means? Follow our tutorial Links to an external site..
- Decide what you need to continue. Think about:
- How you will join these two files together to make a map
- Your software requirements and how you will use it
Tip: Visit our tutorials Links to an external site. for guidance through Harvard Maps
Mapping tools used at the University of Kentucky Libraries' GIS Lab
- CartoLinks to an external site. - Provides GIS, web mapping, and spatial data science tools
- QGISLinks to an external site. - Open source GIS software for creation, analysis, and publication
- and explore other tools used at the University of Kentucky Libraries' GIS Lab Links to an external site.
Brainstorming with ArcGIS (10+ minutes)
Members of the University of Kentucky community can register with the University of Kentucky GIS hub at gishub.uky.edu. Links to an external site. Within this site you can find info on the University's Education Institutional Agreement which provides everyone at UK with access to ESRI software such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Desktop as well as access to ArcGIS Online.
- Take a look at the public maps developed at UK using ArcGIS, such as the eFacTS Map Links to an external site., which provides building information as well as floorplans for each building.
- Think about your research question(s) or topic.
- Explore various map layers available for the University of Kentucky campus under the Data tab.
- Consider the demographic data sources listed under the Data tab, such as LFUCG Open Data Portal Links to an external site. - Access to over 80 geographic data layers from the Lexington's Enterprise GIS; the Kentucky Geography Network Links to an external site.; Data.Gov Links to an external site.; or others at the UK Libraries' GIS Lab Links to an external site. guide.
- How would you combine these two datasets together, to create a map?
- When you are ready to explore, submit a license request for ArcGIS software at under the Esri License Agreement tab.
